The Yellow Butterfly Poem by Owen Cullimore

The Yellow Butterfly

Whilst out walking quietly today
A brand new friend came my way
With fluttering wings he flew by
Was brightly colored, I wondered why
God made him so I stopped to say
To a neighbor I saw on my way
He saw the Butterfly too, and was aghast
His bright coloring was such a blast
About two inches wide was he
From each wingtip that we could see
Fluttering around amongst the Bushes
Darting in and out of the tall bulrushes
Walking down by the riverbank
He followed me as if to thank
Me for my interest in himself
He looked a creature so full of health
Wings that shone and glistened well
In all he did look rather swell
His little body that looked so small
To carry his wings, antennae and all
A miracle of natures making
Too fast he moves for picture taking
I will have to wait until he settles
Which he does so on some stinging Nettles
I move closer, with my camera at the ready
Try to keep my hands real steady
He looks at me as if to say
Hurry up or try another day
As off he flies to pastures new
He disappears to spoil the view
I wonder where he went this time
He really did look so sublime
And suddenly he's gone as quickly as he appeared
Which was what I had expected and feared
It's hard to explain how sad it makes you feel
Not to see him flashing about like a Catherine Wheel
As I walk onward on my merry way
I wonder If I will see him again today.
