They Called This Place Killarney Poem by Francis Duggan

They Called This Place Killarney

They called this place Killarney still no resemblence though
To Killarney county Kerry a place I used to know
And Killarney county Kerry thousands of miles away
From Killarney in Victoria where I passed through today.

They called this place Killarney still no mountains to be seen
A flat unsheltered countryside of paddocks wide and green
In Killarney in county Kerry the hills reach towards the sky
But I see enough beauty here to satisfy me eye.

Killarney in Victoria twelve miles from Warrnambool
On an evening in october an evening bright though cool
And spring in south west Victoria the loveliest time of year
The air borne skylark piping, the magpie's notes ring clear.

Killarney in Victoria by the pacific sea
Quite different from Killarney on main road to Tralee
A different sort of countryside, a different sort of place
Still most people of Killarney have ties to Irish race.

Who named this place Killarney? I'd really like to know
Maybe some homesick Kerryman a long, long time ago
He named this place Killarney and people liked the name
And the name of Killarney in Victoria forever will remain
