Those Letters Were Important Poem by David Howerton

Those Letters Were Important

At least they were for me.

Damn. Most times I sat on bunk
ignoring mail call
forgetting there was an outside.

Tried hard every week
to get words down
so someone would know I was alive.

Then there were weeks
when that was to much
and all that got on page
was the date.
