Three Wishes Poem by Alfred Ramos

Three Wishes

Took a lonely walk down a sandy beach
Thoughts of her were out of reach
Stubbed my toe in the wet sand
Pulled up a genie lamp with my hand
Out jumped the prince of wonderland
He call me his master
My heart couldn’t beat any faster
He said three wishes he would grant me
And each one would enchant me
I could wish for the end of war
But would that heal an ongoing scar
Every day dead soldiers come home to rest
No matter how hard we protest
There’s too much money to be made
By war mongers hiding behind a masquerade
I could wish for food for all the hungry and poor
But all the disheveled red tape makes it unsure
That each bag of rice will find its lost plate
While angels of mercy pray silently for their fate
Or I could be selfish and wish for a Rolls Royce
The Silver Shadow would be my choice
Drive with the top down in an ascot and a beret
Stop a swank gallery and buy a Monet
But I’m not that kind of man
So I just dug a deep hole and reburied the lamp in the sand
