To A Newborn Child Poem by Frank Halliwell

To A Newborn Child

Rating: 5.0

O' welcome little human child, this lovely summer morn,
A better day could scarce be found for you to have been born!
It matters not in any case if you are girl or boy.
Ahead lies life's adventures, some sad, some filled with joy

You soon will feel your mother's love that guides you into life
And comforts you a hundred ways to protect you from strife
To nourish you through tender years and shield you from all harm
To hold you firmly to her breast and keep you snug and warm.

And as you grow in size and strength, to teach you right from wrong
To read to you from yesteryear the stories and the songs
That trace the human populace of earth through joy and tears
From when we first climbed from the trees right up to present years.

And when you reach the teenage years and hormones go berserk
To guide you through those risky paths where unknown dangers lurk.
You may pass to maturity if luck is on your side
And hopefully will do your best and hold your head with pride.

Perhaps you'll find yourself a mate and have a family
And pass from total freedom to responsibility,
And you may know the pain and joy that parenting may bring.
The future though is never sure, a questionable thing,

For every life is not the same; the only certainty...
Is life is never certain, and may end suddenly
But when one life is finished and the cycle has been run...
Somewhere on earth, you can be sure, a new life is begun.

So welcome, little human child, this lovely summer morn,
A better day could scarce be found for you to have been born!
