To Be Loved Poem by Sarah Child

To Be Loved

I see them,
Walking hand in hand,
Smiles on their faces,
Their eyes full of laughter,
With no care in the world.

While I sit alone,
My hand is empty,
My face in a frown,
Worried if I will ever be like them.

Will my hand ever be held by yours?
Will my face ever light up with the happiness of being in love?
My body aches to be held,
My heart yearns to be loved.

You said you loved me,
That you were on my side no matter what,
Or no matter the cost,
You said that you would protect me.

Here I am alone,
With nobody to defend me,
To tell me that they believe in me,
To protect me…

My heart disintegrates,
Little by little with each passing day,
Soon there won’t be anything left to love,
And you will be too late.
