To Malachi Poem by Ellen Rose Guilaran

To Malachi

Your pristine smile hides the brokenness of childhood
The built-in of a man covers a tender young heart
Engulfed me in warmth tenders as it welcomes me
In pure, unfiltered sunlight
But rather than hurt, it covered me in protective layer
Of a brother or friend
But I never saw you as anything than a lover
and I thought, it hurt more than pretend

I will not neglect you like your mother
Or Abandon you like your father
I'll be a mentor, a bad guy, or the light
Like the lamp on a weary traveler's journey in the night
My small light will flicker, endure
Not the snowy winters of Canada
But the cold rainy seasons of Phillips

I will warm and fight
My small little candlelight
To pledge loyalty and flight
Persevere through this
In feast and delight
I will be there with you
But only if you take me
Please, take me
Even a small piece is enough
From yours truly
