To My Grandfather Poem by ann rta

To My Grandfather

You braved the battlefields in France
and fought for freedom and the future.

You saw the unsung heroism of men
and gloried with the country at victory.

You knew how to live sparsely in the
post war of rationing and greyness.

You worked at any jobs you could
for money that was miserly.

Your stories of life accumulated
but now you cannot tell of them as

your body began to falter and fade
until, it quietly gave up trying and

your history flew off with the flames
and sadly has been lost for ever.
