Today I beheld a madman
Speaking to his Beloved in a murmur,
That real controller of every affair;
My Love, I aspire to see you in the Heaven,
As the spirit of your chosen one goes off,
At night to Heaven;
But How can I come to your Heaven,
As I am a poor creature of water and clay!
I too have in my heart music and light of my love,
As your chosen ones have;
On the ladder that joins the earth and the heaven,
I want to put my steps;
He prayed to his Beloved,
'Show me the ladder,
So that I may mount up to you.'
A Qalandar was passing by,
Madman's supplication he heard;
He said, 'Your eyes are the ladder,
Bring your eyes down under your feet;
When you place your feet on your eyes,
You will arrive at the citadel of your Beloved;
Then you walk to the throne of your Beloved;
Set your forehead in prostration,
Before the throne of your Beloved,
And come near!
A hundred ways going to your Beloved,
Will become manifest to you then;
You will go flying up to your Beloved's throne,
Like Gabriel, the archangel.
