Token Friends Poem by Roger Hudson

Token Friends

Can I only prove myself
By proving myself

Achieve to impress

Be remembered

Jolly introvert (sometimes)
Seeming extravert by jolliness
Seeming friendship
Jolly drinks banter

But

Out of sight out of mind

A passing acquaintance
Of school
Of college
Of work
Of pub
Of life

Who are the random few
Who merit the annual token
Years later
Of once-known half-forgotten

A Christmas card
Ensure that small acknowledgement
By sending to them
To force a response
Even if only
A token response
