Topics Of Nissim Ezekiel's Poetry

Night of the scorpion,
Birdwatching and love-making,
Remembrance of convent-school days,
How to be polite and maintain delicacy,
Etiquette and courtesy,
How to use please, thank you, O.K.,
Bye-bye, ta-ta, goodbye?

Miss Pushpa, the Gujarati girl going to the airport
To depart for foreign
And he giving tips in departing for foreign,
A foreign returnee himself to a novice foreign-goer,
The patriot's English, the railway clerk's English
He ruminates over and cracks jokes with
Falling short of a caricature-maker.

Birthday party, picnic party, birthday gifts,
Marriage day celebration,
The jobs of Nissim Ezekiel,
To visit the art gallery and to see arts,
The pregnant woman seeing the nudes
As a stranger appalled to see,
The chuckles and grins of Nissim
Holdings the tongue in cheek.
