Toronto/Canada Poem by Raymond Farrell

Toronto/Canada

This is not
A patchwork quilt
There is no whole cloth
Just a lot of patches
Various ethnicities
Passing in the street
Geographically together
But with
No common heritage
Whatsoever
Any culture that is promoted
Nationally
Comes straight and nearly unadulterated
From the dominant European colonizers
In fact, the so-called country
Of Canada
Is a Balkanized collection
Of regions
Today, people are congenial
But as the economy
Continues to decline
There are signs
The congeniality
Is slowly dissipating
One real honest Great Depression
Like in the 1930s
Will see every group
Now demanding their rights
Rise up
And try to take
Their piece of the pie.
