Travelling Down The Highway Poem by chris schwartz

Travelling Down The Highway

As you travel down the highway
Chained to your steering wheel
Escaping your past
Like a new road
That's been put before you,
I check to make sure
The door that you left from
Has been chained.
The silence
That I feel,
frees you
It's the same quiet
That checks twice
To make sure that the door
Is locked and bolted
Before I turn in.
You are not alone.
But we are so far apart,
Sometimes.
I, just like you,
Cannot carry the burden
Forever.
People tire.
The innocence in life
That I miss
So much
It has been taken away.
Yes, I have been raped.
But you, my love,
Brought it back.
And just as I can
Never escape
The horrible moments
I went through
Trying to find you
I also have nightmares
Picturing life
Without you in it.
I have envy
For you,
That you will never understand.
I have love for you
That I will never be able
To return in full.
But because you
Accept me as I am,
I will rest in love.
