Tree Poem by James Meaney

Tree

This wishing tree
Grows in my yard
I tell it my secrets
I tell it my heart
Though it's only a tree
My wishes never became true
Until Lightning struck
& the tree was burned gone
Realizing now that the tree
was wishing against me all along
