Trysting With Cows Poem by Sheena Blackhall

Trysting With Cows

Today, I visited a herd of cows
No calling card, I dropped in uninvited
Rudely, I interrupted their peaceful grazing

Each cow from a distance
Seemed to be wearing ear rings
The piercings, on closer inspection
Were stamped with numbers
Like convicts in a Gulag
We stood and stared at each other
Over a metal fence.

How to communicate?
How to crack the bovine code of understanding?
This is what we must face in outer galaxies
Survival might be key to mutual living

A one horned matron head-butts a sister aside
To win a better view of this two legged creature
Standing incongruous, like a bull in a china shop
They probably talk of this intrusion for weeks
