Two Poems About Time Poem by Linda Hepner

Two Poems About Time

Rating: 5.0

All those regrets
Mount up
Fill your cup
With regression.

Time can be retrieved
With DNA and other magic,
You'll see! You'll see!
And you once more will be
a comedy believed
once to be over, tragic.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Replies to Gershon Hepner's TIME CANNOT BE DELETED WHEN YOU'RE BARDESQUE

Time cannot be deleted,
for it leaves traces like the data
within a hard disc,
but being bardesque
can bring back moments like a fait a-
ccompli, obsoleted.

Richard Eder ("Heresies of the Paintbrush, " NYT Book Review, September 2,2001) , reviews "My Name is Red, " by Orhan Pamuk, translated by Erdag M. Goknor (Knopf) . Pamuk appears to be the successor of Yashar Kemal, whose novels I greatly enjoyed forty years ago. The novel tells of two murders in the 16th century during the reign of Sultan Murat III, a patron of miniaturists whose art had come to Turkey from Persia in the course of the previous hundred years. The novel describes the conflict between the "Eastern" concept of art in which all painting is an act of memory and foreordained and art of the Italian Renaissance where figures are individual, portraits are of specific people. Since Islam enjoined against figuration, miniatures could only be generic, subordinate to the text they illustrated. Perspective, too, was heretical. A mosque far off would be smaller than a man or even a dog close up. People and things, the objection went, "weren't depicted according to their importance in Allah's mind but as they appeared to the naked eye".

Eder begins his review:

Time's deletions, like a computer's, are not easily deleted. A technician can restore what the keyboard has made to vanish and the past is never quite gone. Historical change deteriorates and slides back; defeat hangs around, sometimes for centuries, awaiting the chance to become victory. Not only did the South rise again; it went Republican.
