Typically Filipino Poem by RIC BASTASA

Typically Filipino

a woman is picking lice
from her son's head

beside her
another woman breastfeeds
her newborn

our taxi passed there

the fat woman beside me
wished
that she had her camera with her

a man plows the nearby field
another man fishes on the river

the fields are green and the skies are gray

the road is muddy and the rain seems
to be forever

the hut is too small for two families
