U. S. English

Scottish calls the sky the lift.
If English went lift for sky,
would USA go elevator?

Look! up in the elevator!
It's a bird! It's a plane!

Let's not go later.
Let's go now,
when the evening is spread out
against the elevator...

Eliot may have used 'lift'
by '...Prufrock' in '15:

Let us visit now, when we are able,
when the evening is spread out
against the lift
like a patient etherised upon a table.
