Understanding Poem by Jo R. Escher

Understanding

I sat shivering in the Red Rock crevasse
Bundled tightly in the bearskin robe
The snow glistens ever softly against the moonlight
I watch the winter wind teach the flakes to dance

Unknowing the lesson I am to learn
This silent night will change my journey forever
I will bear witness alone
Now, my responsibility to write in words

I watch as he advances from the west
His desperation drives him forward
Seeking a refuge from this storm
With worn perseverance, throwing himself into the wind

My eyes follow this progression along the rocks jagged edge
The snow has lain deep and hidden the dangers away
He walks through a glass house awaiting the un-cast stone
I feel my breath time in unison with his steps

The rest I share through memory
My eyes have grown heavy and are much too tired to observe
As I feel the snow give way to the weight cast upon it
The wind quickly steals away the screams from his lips

I feel the blood as it freezes to his fingertips
He clutches to the rocks with impassioned fear
His boy hangs heavy and helpless against the cliffs wall
The flesh of his hands tearing away as blood stains the snow

I heard his voice cry out
He calls desperately for help, as his words fall silent on the winds
Muscles ache, as deaths icy fingers surround him in silence
Again he screams out into the ghostly moonlight

Time stops......
Warmth and light fill all that is
I am blinded and can not see
Powerful words now form UN-spoken

Trust me....Let Go
The morning sunlight warms my face
As I looked from my slumber to see this day
The snow lies as a blanket upon the landscape
UN-touched by human hands

At once I remember the man from the west
I turn to look with new found sight
He hangs there against the cliff wall
As frozen as the snow upon him

The ground looming but only five feet below him
I understand
