🎶 HIT IT, BOYS! 🪕🎹🥁😂
THE EDITH LYNN UNDICTIONARY
Words That Weren't Words… Until They Were
Penned from the words of Edith Lynn Niemeyer
[Spoken — Female]
They said it wasn't a word.
[Male]
Who said?
[Female]
The dictionary.
[Male]
Oh.
[Female]
So I made another one.
[Male, calling out]
Hit it, boys!
[Banjo kicks in]
[Verse 1]
I publitized a little song,
then baddened up the Silence,
Yester flied a complaint at me
for grammatical noncompliance.
Spellcheck threw its hands up,
Webster packed his bags,
the apostrophes went marching off
and punctuation raised white flags.
The nouns called up the verbs and said,
"We've got ourselves a situation! "
I said—
"Calm yourselves,
tiz merely...
wordification."
[Chorus]
Welcome to the UnDictionary,
where the words don't need permission.
If the proper one ain't proper enough,
we make a new edition!
We conjugate the impossible,
put apostrophes where we please,
and if a sentence gets too sensible—
[Spoken]
Quillkin?
[Male]
Yes?
[Female]
Mess with it.
[Male]
With pleasure.
[Verse 2]
There's baddened in the B's now,
publitized in P,
and Yester flied straight past the Y's
shouting,
"You can't alphabetize me! "
"Betwixt" came dressed in velvet,
"Tiz" strutted through the door,
while "wordage" climbed upon the desk
demanding something more.
Then spellcheck drew a little red line—
under everything I'd writ.
I stared right back
at that squiggly thing...
and publitized it.
[Instrumental — banjo / clarinet argument]
[Male]
You can't publitize a red line.
[Female]
Already did.
[Male]
That's not how language works.
[Female]
Seems to be working.
[Male]
Fair point.
[Bridge — suddenly grand and overly serious]
For every word
was once unheard
before somebody
gave it sound.
Every phrase
had a first strange day
before the world
passed it around.
So perhaps
the dictionary isn't where
a word is truly born.
Perhaps it starts
when somebody needs
a meaning...
that hasn't got a word.
[Beat]
[Male]
That was unexpectedly profound.
[Female]
Don't worry.
I'll ruin it.
[FINAL CHORUS — everybody joins]
Welcome to the UnDictionary!
Bring your wordage, one and all!
Bring the nearly-right,
the not-quite-there,
the words that trip and fall!
We'll badden what needs baddening,
publitize what must be seen,
and should Yester flied another complaint—
we'll file it under—
[Everyone]
"MEAN! "
[Female]
That doesn't rhyme.
[Male]
Neither does half your dictionary.
[Female]
Exactly.
[Outro]
[Male]
Any final words?
[Female]
Nope.
[Male]
Really?
[Female]
Haven't invented them yet.
[Banjo pluck]
[Female, from a distance]
Hit it, boys!
[Entire band crashes back in.] 🎶😂
