Unearthly Poem by Shruti Goswami

Unearthly

The wraps were useless,
Against the strong gale,
That shook my inner core
As I stood, on the bridge,
Midway between two stays.
I shivered, and felt redundant,
Like the wraps that flapped,
Helplessly around me.
And the wind made a hissing sound,
As scores of bamboo trees,
Invaded its path.
The fierce bite of cold somehow,
Seemed soothing to my frayed nerves.
An occasional burst of hot spring,
From the deep recess of eyes,
Was the only sense of warmth I had,
Amidst the cold serenity of the skies.
The silence and darkness of the hills,
Broke often by the cars that passed,
Heard some people chat and laugh,
And the silence swelled in size.
Looks of surprise, on the face, in their eyes,
As I stood on the bridge alone,
Dauntless, intrepid, intriguing thoughts
Oblivious of the shadows around.
Did the time stand still? Was I lost?
Or wanting to be,
The heart’s desire was just to see,
Feel, inhale the air,
And nature’s bounty at such unearthly hours.
T’was dark, cold, with winds of ice,
And yet for the starved and seeking souls,
Like me, the earth had lit,
A million stars,
In the vast expanse of the frozen sky.
