Unruly Elongated Trees Poem by Danny Draper

Unruly Elongated Trees

4 Pandorea pandorana 'Golden Showers'
Planted with fond narrative and hope
Were removed urgently yesterday with
A combatants sense of purpose,
From the narrow side of the house
Planted less than a year ago and
Diligently nurtured to tangled beasts.
Fickle is a garden's course to right
and I will miss each shower of gold,
But not each stems boisterous reach
To roof and grab of structures to entwine,
Hot water solar panels, pipes and leads,
Piercing house planks into darkness
Stems garrotte, trip and ensnare,
Ratchet anvil secateurs chomp to blisters
Unscheduled maintenance nears resolution,
Nipped finger tip disrupts repetition,
Hasty triage finally concedes to gloves.
Bypass pradines lop and gnaw
Restoring kitchen window light,
Stark the side fence once more
Corrugated pale eucalyptus green,
Last summer's samaras litter around
Weeds through ill laid pavers claw,
Mobile green bin stomped to bursting,
Roots wrenched by back and hacking
Skyward soil and mulch disbursed,
Extraction complete, perimeter secure
Renegade allies vanquished,
Cessation: wander wander.
