Voyage To The Underworld Poem by Laurence Overmire

Voyage To The Underworld

Poems coagulate
In the wounds that mark
This body carnival

I know not why
The tourniquet of a sentence
Stops death
From breaking through
A gangrenous life

But it does

I am the medicine
Of my own language
I am made
Word by word
Into something greater

Born out of one's own soul
There is
A beating of the heart
In the tuneful lapse of
Second on second

A rhythm that finds its
Singular space
In the pantheon of time.
