Walked Up To Christmas Poem by Christine Gries

Walked Up To Christmas

Today I walked up to Christmas
the town dressed in strings of lights
Wreaths hung on doors
and the glow of candle light

Crispy brown leaves
hanging on, keeping the tree whole
while the wind shakes them
and my soul

Today I walked up to Christmas
wondering what the future would tell
Violence of the past week
making holiday spirits bleak

So walking up to Christmas
Wondering what the world had become
Though the season sings of love and goodwill
the air had a chill

I walked up to Christmas
and whispered this prayer
Peace, joy and love
for all far and near

With lights shining in our eyes
and the wonder of a child
lets step into Christmas
and hold peace for a while
