Wanderer Poem by David Smart

Wanderer

I wander long over many roads
Through field and fen, through forest deep
And as I ride, bearing heavy loads
My steed and I crave restfull sleep,
But on we go, though the way be steep.

For many years we have wandered far
Seeking that thing, we know not where
Though our road leads to the farthest star
Our backs are bent with greater care
We know only this - we must seek it there.

That thing we seek we have never seen
Though we have searched the whole world wide
But here and there a word we glean
A hint of where that thing may hide
So, in search of it, ever on we ride.

Though many years have now passed by
We have not found that which is best
'Till now at last, as we fall and lie
And slip into that final rest
We find in death we attain our quest.
