Wanting To Fly Poem by Thomas McKelvey

Wanting To Fly

Sometimes, it seems, life
is a series of tiny catastrophes
so, I'm not surprised that
you're not talking to me
as we sit in silent solitude
together, while I drive.
You're looking out the window
at the highway, watching all
of the other cars, as they go by,
wondering. And I think I know
what you're thinking, yeah
I used to do it too;
Looking up at the airplanes at night
wondering if they were going
to a happier place, than where I was.
But it doesn't matter
who's wrong or right
not when i fight
with the woman who probably
saved my life.
Your eyes are tearing,
I can see it in the reflection
as I'm watching you,
looking inside more than out,
trying to remember
the reasons We are.
And I don't want to push you
any farther away
than you are right now,
next to me, but wanting to fly
away.
