Warbling Bird With Modest Plumes Poem by Emmanuel George Cefai

Warbling Bird With Modest Plumes

You
Sing
A warbling bird
With modest plumes.

Night fires the
Light in you
More than the day.

And the waters more
Than land
In your eye's vision
Lay.

Night/Water vs. Day/Land: I've said this before about your poetry: it is inspired by the dark wisdom of night. And also it deals with metamorphosis of things and people rather than fixed identities. Water, a solvent, is symbolic of metamorphosis. The humble bird who embodies this double vision reminds me of Wallace Stevens's prophetic bird in his last poem: THE BIRD'S FIRE-FANGLED FEATHERS DANGLE DOWN. His bird is garish whereas yours is humble, but both birds stand for the truth of POETRY.
