We Are But A Drawing On Paper Poem by Mohammad Younus

We Are But A Drawing On Paper

We are but a drawing on paper,
Or a painting on canvas,
Expressing the artist's will,
As he dreams, feels, and thinks.

Though drawn in indelible ink,
We cannot be erased with ease;
Internally, we shift, we change,
As thought and direction bend.

We are not dismissed, forgotten,
Like crumpled paper in the fire;
Our mistakes, sins, disillusionment—
All are a prelude to our enlightenment.

Our lives flow on, smooth and fine,
In the eyes of the Divine.
Drawn by a pen that begins as light,
A line that never ends.

We can only perceive this truth
When the black veil of death is torn,
And in the radiant dawn we wake,
Knowing we were eternal all along.
