We Become What We Become Poem by Emmanuel Karikoga

We Become What We Become

At once he was a good boy and a church person,
Then he grew old and life became different.
He spends more time in the bar or clubbing than he did in the past,
Mom is home sick;
Furious and anxious to know what happened to her son.
Sadly, the answers she seeks are nowhere close,
Was her son peer-pressured or he solely chosen to become a bad boy?

At once she was a kid and she never attended sunday school,
Both parents always complained until they lost all patience,
They prepared for the worst and assumed she wouldn't change.
Clubbing and a boys playground is how society described her,
Then suddenly, the girl just changed as if Jesus himself had visited her.
She recently joined the praise team and always preaching the gospel,
Her parents are astonished and now they believe in miracles.

Life has no formula;
What used to be a good fruit has dismally been rotten,
What used to be bad has successfully turned to be a good example.
Society used to say he was excellent because his parents raised him well,
Society used to say she will marry and wed successfully with the devil in hell,
But the realities of life are escaping society's imagination,
She seems to be out of touch with the answers for this dramatic transformation.

Our questions remain unanswered but we will continue to ask more,
Nothing is certain tomorrow and nobody knows what the future holds.
Society will continue to preach good morals and adherence to ethical codes,
Despite the changes that occur as people get old.
Every newborn child is a blessing, they give us a reason to smile,
But whom we truly are is reviewed when we become what we become.
