The sturdy church door is open wide
(the sun slanting onto the steps and shining through)
to let in groom and guests and then the bride
for the solemn ceremony for the chosen two.
Onlookers from under overhanging trees
outside hear the ceremony close with prayer
and the couple rise from their obedient knees:
vows exchanged, promises properly made, they appear
radiant from shadows into laughter and raucous cheers,
walking confidently into their conjoining years,
confetti blossoms left on paving stones like drying tears.
