Were Under A Shadow Of The Dail. Poem by Mai Murphy Venn

Were Under A Shadow Of The Dail.

There was a record 5,457 homeless children in Ireland,
Wake up, citizens, get ready to make a mighty stand.
We will not move; we will wait at the gates of the Dail.
What is right for the wealthy should be right for all.
The banners we carry, we will hold them high.
And we will ask questions, we Irish will inquire why.
No child should suffer homelessness in Ireland today.
Our top politicians are not very clever, I would have to say.
Given seventy-two million to the global fund, they gave it away.
While poor families in Ireland grow poorer each day.
We suffer in our wage packets as they deduct income tax.
seventy-two million gone without a thought, and that is a fact.
So do we sit back and do nothing, or do we put up a fight?
We know this is wrong, yet how do we go about setting it, getting it right?
Do we march on the streets in our towns as we did before?
Do we place a petition outside the government door?
Do we pass the word by mouth, or do we leave out a shout?
How much more do we take, before we get angry and we brake.
