Whale Song Poem by Kyrgiakos Punnilathil

Whale Song

In days of old when Earth was young
and a lot was unexplored,
there lived a creature great and bold
and alone he often roved.

Desert sands he crossed with ease
and claimed the mountain peaks.
But his heart forever longed to see
the bottom of lakes and creeks.

So one day when the sun was out,
and the earth was cozy and warm.
He dove into the flowing stream
and merrily splashed and swam.

Long breaths he drew, as he explored,
the stones and plants and reefs.
And before long he made good friends
with the fish and the turtles and their chiefs.

The sun had set but he lingered on
to explore just a little more.
But the currents in the stream
had pushed him long away from shore.

And there he fell asleep until
the ocean became his home.
And his heart was satisfied because
he had more room to roam.

Now in the depths where men can't breathe
you can hear the reverberating gong.
The melody of that creature of old,
that beautiful whale song.
