What Do You Seek Within? Poem by Mohammad Younus

What Do You Seek Within?

What do you seek within?
That is without too;
What do you deem hidden?
That is manifest too;
O Soul,
What do you see dead,
That was before living;
What do you find living,
That was before dead;

'He brings the living,
Out of the dead,
And brings the dead,
Out of the living,
And brings to life the earth,
After its lifelessness.
And thus will you be brought out¹.
I seek a Life that has never born,
And that shall never die;
I have surely my origin in that Life;
When I go within,
I find great silence where,
The word of Allah is heard,
In echoing melodious sound;

I find a light there that
from secret comes:
And enlightens me within,
With knowledge divine and
wisdom;

I see door and windows open,
Of the House of God within;
Where round the clock
I circumambulate,
Chanting Labaika Allahuma Labaika!

I remember here my Lord alone;
And feel myself face to face,
In that House of light!
As I was when first was I born,
To hear the address of God:
Am I not your lord?
