What For Poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

What For

What for

Late in the August night, she was driving into town
it was a warm night, full moon hung low on a heaven
of dreams; she heard a click but didn't sense
the blast, ripping the car apart with claws of demise.
She was lifted up high and landed in the raven forest
with inflamed soil of many wars fought.
Her brain managed to think before it stopped
asking what for?
On the same night, a young man hastened to town
he was in love and texted his beloved text that became
the whispering wind
Too late to stop the car ran under a heavy truck
his head parted from the body and landed on a sable coat
in the diminishing seconds of consciousness
The brain asked what for.
