She took the time to teach me
Everything she knew
About keeping house and cooking
And raising children too.
I watched her every day
Bake cookies, pies and cakes
I learned what my dad loved to eat
And what being a good cook takes.
I watched her lop the head off
Of a chicken from the pen
And even though I’ve never done it
I know it’s not a sin.
I watched her fix the meals
When nothing much was there
I learned about not wasting things
What we had, we had to share.
I learned about raising flowers
For everywhere we’d live
She’d make it home in no time
She had so much to give.
And yes, she made mistakes
As every mother does
She did it all the hard way
But she did it all with love.
