What If? Poem by Donna McCord

What If?

Walking in my shoes won’t take you where you want to go
But maybe you could see the you I have come to know
We can’t build our future til we leave the past behind
And try to forgive each other and practice being kind

What if we had never met, what if we’d never said I do?
What if we never had a son who looks so much like you?
What if we could turn the clock back to night before you cheated?
What if I had never said the words that made you look defeated.

The windshield of the car is larger than the rearview mirror
What’s behind us seems so small when we see the bigger picture
So just forget what I said, it doesn’t matter anymore
I’d rather see you walking in than walking out the door.

What if we could learn to listen with our heart not with our ears
What if seeing meant believing and we could silence what we fear
What if we could change the world by standing up for our beliefs
Then maybe we could live in peace and quit living for What Ifs.
