Hindi was my language,
It is now not
As I teach in a college
Of the Bengali-speaking locality and area
Where Hindi is not taught
Where people speak it not Hindi
And I carry on with my half-Bengali, half-Hindi
While conversing with the students and teachers,
My wife is a Bengali wife,
My son knows it Khortha and Hindi,
But cannot write it Hindi
As I too cannot write it in Bengali,
My daughter knows it not Hindi
As she can neither read nor write it,
But can understand my Khortha dialect
Just for to carry it forward
The love of the mother tongue
And the scent of the grains.
