..What Life Is This?

From a soldier who had served twelve years,
Every day has brought along more tears,
And now I've lost all hopes and fears,
What life is this I lead?

My head I lay upon the floor,
In the shadows of a cold shop door,
I cannot take this anymore,
What life is this I lead?

A sleeping bag, a cardboard box,
Scruffy clothes and unkempt locks,
Surviving like an urban fox,
What life is this I lead?

Comments made as you stroll on by,
A dirty look or hurtful sigh,
I turn my head and start to cry,
What life is this I lead?

I'm trying hard to start again,
As I walk along in the pouring rain,
My heart has never known such pain,
What life is this I lead?
