What Makes Us All Unique? Poem by Kiran Pillai

What Makes Us All Unique?

I know I have been lucky many times.
Things just click when I least expect it.
Sometimes grand things happen easily
And I struggle with mundane so much.

Have seen marriage happen easily
Have seen a book published so easily.
Yet, parking a car has been a nightmare.
So is waking up early morning for me.

I know making a public speech is easy for me.
I can write a paragraph like wind through trees.
But, asking someone for a favour is impossible.
Forget asking for a raise. I will not do it!

Maybe the parameters of world are different
From the concepts that I entertain within me.
The easy for me is tough for all world outside
And the hard nut in their eyes is cake for me.

Isn't poetry supposedly tough for the world?
And don't people enjoy parking so well?
What must be reason it all turned around for me?
Probably that is how life made things for me.

The idea of each being being unique is true.
Uniqueness comes in small forms, not grand.
All the tiny bits and pieces of us combine
To fashion grand uniqueness in all of us.

How does being unique make us one
As members of the human race after all?
Even trees and animals are unique.
Then, why do we fit things as categories?

Probably we have all been programmed
To believe that we are so special in grand ways.
Maybe the grandness comes as tiny parts
That we just need to take in and integrate.

I am unique. So are you. So is all of us.
Recognise the areas that make us unique
Create the world within that is just you.
Sit inside and soak in what makes you unique!
