What You Left Behind Poem by Subarna Chakraborty

What You Left Behind

You came into my life quietly,
and left before I could understand
what your presence had begun to change in me.

I never knew a person could stay
without staying at all.
After you were gone,
something in me became quieter
but somehow, deeper.

You left me with thoughts
I had never thought before,
words I had never written,
and a strange tenderness
for things I cannot hold.
Perhaps you were never meant to be mine.

Perhaps you were only meant
to awaken something in me
that had been waiting for you.
I don't know where you are now,
or whether you ever think of me.
But somewhere between
your arrival and your disappearance,
you became a part of a story
I am still learning to write.

And if I ever write something beautiful,
perhaps a little of it
will always belong to you.'
