What's Empathy Poem by Tor Magnor Solvang

What's Empathy

The sun, a fiery, selfish blaze,
But look at leaves, in greenest maze.
The tree gives shade, the flower its scent,
No tally kept, no debt is lent.
They serve the bee, the bird, the breeze,
Content in giving, at their ease.

We built up walls, so strong and high,
To reach and conquer, touch the sky.
But strength is found in bending low,
When storms arrive and tempests blow.
We rise again, not by the fall
Of others, but standing tall,
The spirit true, that will not break,
For goodness and for kindness sake.

No need for battles, loud and grand,
For power's grip across the land.
A gentle smile, a helping hand,
A stranger's kindness, close at hand.
A listening ear, a word so true,
The simple rhyme of me and you.
These quiet gifts, in plainest dress,
Hold magic and true happiness.

A heart of stone, it feels so cold,
A story of the lonely told.
But see the spark, the common thread,
The silent battles, left unsaid.
To know another's hidden strife,
To walk a mile in their own life,
That's empathy, a bridge so wide,
Where understanding can reside.
