When I Was Young Poem by Shalom Freedman

When I Was Young

WHEN I WAS YOUNG

When I was young
I lived for the future
For the dream
Of making a work
I would be remembered for.

Now I am old
There is no work
I will be remembered for-

So I try now
More than before
To live in the present.

But I am too old
And the Present can no longer be mine
As it might have been in my youth.
