When Love Changes Poem by Erika Wingo

When Love Changes

Rating: 5.0

Love changes
Without warning
And with total disregard
Like the weather
Like the wind
Like a chance
On a whim
Like the season that comes
To an end
Before a new one begins
It leads you to a
Lonely place
A single road leading nowhere
You look up from
Your bleak surroundings
To find love gone
Without a trace
Suddenly you feel like
A stranger
Who never felt or knew
What used to
Fill the empty, lonesome
Space
That change has left behind

Love changes
Without asking first
Like the minutes become hours
Like the daylight succumbs
To moonlight
And the busy bustle of the day
Becomes subdued and still
Leaving one to relive memories
That then invade their dreams
Every night against their will

Love changes
Without sympathy
Nor shame
Sending everything it ever was
Spiraling down into a bottomless
Abyss
With an unspeakable name
It pulls you in deeper
Moment by moment
Into its darkness where the pain
Is constant and inflamed
The force of change
Can turn a person into
An unrecognizable soul
Love almost never
Stays the same
