When Once The Hopeless Sun Into The Sea Doth Drown Poem by Colin Breck Boardman

When Once The Hopeless Sun Into The Sea Doth Drown

When once the hopeless Sun into the sea doth drown,

And the deep and oily mantle darkly sets its grave,

And all the endless stars above silently stare down,

We listen to the wash of all the tears they gave.

For Death doth shadow over us though we be unaware,

To mark us each and every day, as the light which falls,

Lighting 'pon each shallow breath to range beyond repair,

Yet leaving us this silent void, hopelessly to call.

But O, when all is lost and our blackness seems unending,

The Moon, with sweet companionship doth smile,

And our swollen eyes now in the darkness mending,

Yet makes out her glimmer, mile by mile.

Then Lo, aloft the Sun is born once more,

And happy hopes do to our hearts restore.
