When The Coins Refuse To Sing Poem by Dellas Chitekwe

When The Coins Refuse To Sing

In this land of sunshine and silence,
Where gold hides deep and bread hides deeper,
We wake up chasing zeros that multiply
Like lies at a political rally.

Factories used to hum songs of labour,
Now they cough dust like old lungs
Have you ever seen a degree gather dust
Like forgotten history?
We've got university graduates selling airtime,
Teachers pushing tomato carts,
Engineers fixing shoes;
The hustle became the syllabus,
And survival? —the final exam.

But still—
We joke through pain,
Sing through hunger,
Dance through the chaos.

We are laughter on empty stomachs,
We are thunder with no rain,
We are Zimbabwe—
Broke but unbroken,
Tired but unbowed,
Bleeding yet still breathing;
Because in this country
Dreams don't expire—they are just postponed.
