When The Sun Rises Poem by Mohammad Younus

When The Sun Rises

When the sun rises
to dispel the darkness,
who would mind standing
within the ring of fire?
The ages ask:
When have we not failed
our true selves,
even as God watched?
He who fashioned us,
from the breath of truth,
to be in His image,
willed us to ascend
the mount of truth—
to test our free will.
Yet we forgot the covenant,
took gurus and sheikhs
as our lords.
Still, He continually asks,
'Am I not your Lord? '
