Where I'm From Poem by Asteria Stars

Where I'm From

I am from Coathangers,
from Pine Sol, Black Cherry air freshener,
and vacuum cleaners
I am from Wissy Foo,
Swing set jumping,
and sandbox castles,
I am from the great Oak and Ash,
whose leaves turn red, yellow,
and orange around my birthday,
the proud Tiger Lillies and small buttercups that sprout every spring,

I am from the petrichor before the calm peaceful rain,
from the rosettes,
and potatoes and sausage all fresh and made from love,
I am from the Happy neewollaH's,
the ‘Love You, 's and, ‘Goodnight's,
from the ‘Sweet Home Alabama' sing-alongs,
the endless nights spent awake on my bed reading,
and the clumpy feel of mascara on my lashes

I am from the tears shed from a sad song,
Car rides on back roads,
and Children Mercy doctors,
From "I can hear the sound of rain in my heart, of the tears that I hide, "
the "Over and over I keep going over the world we knew, "
and countless other lyrics that I remember like the back of my own hand,
I am from ‘You Are My Sunshine'
the sound of tumbling mats,
as they rumble from the feet hitting them,
from the banana Laffy Taffy popsicles
that my great-grandma helped me sneak,
from the sweet taste of butterscotch,
and iced sweet tea.

I am from my mother's flowery perfumes,
the sweet earthy smell of dirt,
From the glow of the fairy lights in my secret hideaway,
That was not quite a secret,
I am from the hammocks
that I lay in under the stars
on the cool nights of fall
I am from these memories-
Dulling as they leave.
