Where The North Begins Poem by Martin Ward

Where The North Begins

It weaves between fields and houses;
unseen over furrows and towns, this line,
carving the border between North and South.
The closer you look, the more you see:
connections of hearts and minds, branded
by intonations, brassy as crucible vowels.
Northerners' DNA,hewn from the land
that holds its child with an elemental grip.

The North: traced in seams
that run through rock

and flows through veins.
