While It Lasts Poem by Yaya King

While It Lasts

Enjoy the moment,
For whatever time it will last
Because life can switch up at any time,
And your present might instantly become the past
If it does, make sure your heart doesn't end up with a cast

Reality itself is a lie
It always switches up,
Often in the blink of an eye
I don't ever let my hopes run high
For as long as they can painfully die,
I'd rather avoid anything that'd make me cry

I kill that that hope
And forsake that expectation,
I take what I'm given,
Making sure to keep away from the question,
Of whether there will be more
Before the answer leaves my heart on the floor

I'm not speaking out of nowhere
Once upon a time; my hopes and expectations were way up there
Until life gave me a kick, one I couldn't bear
Taking away from me what was so dear,
Making a reality out of my worst nighmare
