Who We Are... Poem by Lisa Michelle Anderson

Who We Are...

Who we are...

We are those society has alienated because of our mistakes...

We are those who are misguided by warped beliefs, traditions and prejudices...

We are those society wishes to forget of those who refuse to forgive...

Who we are...

We are those society reaches out to, but, only to place us in handcuffs rather than help us...

We are those who have unjustly offended many, disrupting innocent lives with evil...

We are those society does not wish to understand so as a 'minority' we are viewed as 'inhuman'...

Who we are...

We are those society will not trust because of stereotypic minds that are suffocated with content...

We are those who are unafraid of any prison or darkness because we come from broken homes, broken relationships, poor neighborhoods and worse...

We are those society strives to strip of dignity and hope in the name of impartial justice...

Who we are...

We are those society placed in warehouse cages filled with poison that breeds rapidly like a wildfire in the wilderness...

We are those society has so resentfully labeled as X-Citizens, X-Cons, X-Salvageable and even X-Human Beings...

We are those society has made a conscious choice to exclude from being worthy of compassion and love...

Who we are...

We are those who can no longer escape the fact that we must become responsible, to live decent and to take full accountability for our past offenses against God, Our Families, You, Our Community and Society as a whole...

We are those society calls Alcoholics, Drug Addicts, Bums, An Embarrassment, Criminals, Gang Bangers and More...

Yet, we are just like everyone else in society...

We are Fathers and Mothers, Sons and Daughters, Brothers and Sisters and Enemy or Friend...

No Less - No Greater than ANYONE ELSE in Society...

Who we are...

SIMPLY We Are ALL CHILDREN OF GOD!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This story poem came to me during an extremely rough time in my life and I was angry at the things i was learning about myself and I started seeing how society was judging or I mean viewing either myself or a family member and at times my entire family. As I came to realize these things I started looking over my life and at different events that had occurred to see if I had been that blind or that much a part of society to just blindly follow the masses and found that I was ashamed of myself and could not believe that I had not seen this stuff sooner and I could not believe that I probably missed out on having some amazing people in my life because of this and decided to change my life and the way I look at each person! It has been an amazing journey looking at the major events in my life and each statement in my poem represents an event in my life where either one of my family member or myselfa was treated that way or we had treated someone this way. I truly hope everyone can read this with an open mind and heart and possibly walk away from the masses and be ok knowing it doesn't matter what society or anyone else thinks of you because we all are simply children of God No Less No More
